Nana’s Bits and Pieces - Again

Years ago, my sister asked me what I would do if I ever retired. I took her question seriously, pondered it for a while, and finally had an answer. I wanted to write.

If this opening sounds familiar, it is because you read it four years ago when I began a one-year adventure into blogging weekly about the experiences of being a senior citizen, a grandparent, a retiree, a traveler…in short. about being me. After that year (and 52 blogs), I shifted direction and went back to just sharing those bits and pieces with my ever-indulgent family.

During my sabbatical, I realized I still needed a creative outlet.  I sewed in previous years and have admired all the creations coming from Sydnie’s sewing room, but finally acknowledged that my fingers don’t thread needles as ably as they once did.  I considered gardening and remembered that I don’t enjoy pulling weeds, harvesting crops, or getting my hands dirty. (See Blog from December 8, 2021.) Cooking seemed likely, but even the simple recipes elude me. They are over-cooked, under-cooked, or not appetizing for reasons unknown to me.

So, I remained hungry for creative outlets. My sister’s question echoed in my head, and I realized the answer was the same.  Where can I combine a love of words and stories, a desire to laugh at myself, and the joy of “chatting” regularly with friends? Through blogging!

I shared with my therapist my anxiety that I might not be able to do one each week. She reminded me that a weekly blog was a goal I set for myself, and I could skip any week without being “fired.” I also decided not to pay the monthly subscription for a program that would email subscribers each time I post. Below, you may find a form for subscribing. That is because I don’t know how to turn it off! Ignore it for now, and let’s all hope one of my tech-savvy family members can make that happen soon.

When I have something to share, it will be done on a Friday. I will post at my leisure, and you can read at yours.

The rest of this blog is taken directly from my post of September 1, 2021. There is no plagiarism issue, as I would have to sue myself.

Life often presents challenges, but I find that there are many things to laugh about. I invite you to laugh with me (and even at me). This blog will be an effort at sharing the humor in ordinary things – and will be limited to 500 words. I hope that is enough to make you feel it was worth the effort and not so much it feels like homework.

I have named my blog “Nana’s Bits and Pieces” intentionally. In my world. “Nana” will always be loved unconditionally, regardless of what embarrassing moments may be revealed in my blogging. And “Bits and Pieces” frees me to write whatever comes to my head without thought of theme or topic.

I am amazed at how the world became a more interesting place when I asked myself, “How would I tell that story?”

I look forward to “talking” with you and invite you to comment if you want to talk back.
