2021 REPORT CARD

Before you begin reading, let me relieve your anxiety by assuring you that this is NOT an evaluation of politics, our country’s current issues or a statement on climate or morality. It is MY report card.

I was always a good student and as an Enneagram Two, I was hungry for teacher approval so I behaved well and turned in all assignments.  And yet, I still faced each report card season with trepidation. In 2nd grade, on the last day of school, my heart pounded as I turned over the report card to see if I had passed to 3rd grade. And each year after that I worried that I may have missed an assignment and failed science. Or wondered if that confusion about the Pythagorean theorem might result in a C in math. I was always relieved to see those A’s every six week with a few Bs from time to time to keep me humble.

As an adult, we don’t have clear evaluations to let us know we are doing well. Maybe a raise or promotion at work. Or your in-laws have decided you were an asset to their family. And high marks if your children grew up to be people you enjoy being with.

As a senior adult, those grading periods are even harder to identify. So, I have come up with my own personal evaluation (and an opportunity for someone to say “good job.”)

WRITING - A

I started a blog and write regularly. I have 114 followers which Jennette thinks is viral and makes me famous. I suspect I am enjoying this much more than the 114 followers.

PHYSICAL FITNESS - B

I walk five times a week around the track and have not fallen. However, I am not getting any faster or walking any farther.

GEOGRAPHY - A

Traveled to visit family and friends in Fort Worth, Texas; Jacksonville, Florida; and Gaithersburg, Maryland. I wish Geography had been this interesting in school.

GOVERNMENT - A

While in Gaithersburg, toured Washington DC and was appropriately awed by our Declaration of Independence, Constitution, Bill of Rights and the Magna Carta.

HISTORY - A

See Government and add museums and monuments.

MATH - B

Ended the year with expenditures exceeding income. But deficit in 2021 was less than 2020 so giving myself extra credit for improvement.

HEALTH - B

After my visit with primary care doctor, I got test results and was happy enough to forward to family on our group chat. However, I found that I am still overweight. I weight regularly, but until the doctor said it, I was living in denial.

READING - A

I completed 51 books this year including the BIBLE. Should reading the BIBLE in a year get me bonus points?

LANGUAGE - B

Martin and I have a trip to Europe planned this year so I read Just Enough Italian. I am not fluent but have learned phrases like “Where is the restroom?” and “Two gelatos, please.”

I am content with my progress in 2021 but a bit anxious about turning the report card over to see if I pass to 2022.

  2. Wow, Europe! Does earing authentic Italian count as intro to culinary school?
And I would say that I'm just as excited to read your blog as you are to write it.
